Chapter 12

Tennessee

I wasn’t sure how I managed to catch the ball, land and stay upright. All I knew was that making it into the end zone was my one and only mission, and it didn’t matter that there was a searing pain in my knee, I had to make it across the line. Cullen’s pass hadn’t been the planned play, and I wasn’t sure he had enough on the ball, but he’d seen me break free. I considered it a testament to the intuition we’d developed over the years of playing together—and of our friendship. Knowing each other’s moves was what could get the Chargers past the first round of the state playoffs.

But, for now, knowing we’d pulled off a win against the Otters was all that mattered. Our cross town rivals, we’d finally broken the curse and could hold our heads up high. We’d done Covington Prep proud, and it was thanks to Coach Mercer, who had believed in us since he took over the coaching role in our freshman year.

Coach put out an open invitation for everyone to go back to his house. And though I dearly wanted to go home and ice and elevate my leg, I couldn’t miss out on celebrating with the team. I’d take some more pain meds to get me through the evening.

And then I saw Millie. Compared to the cheerleaders in their short skirts and crop tops, she looked all prim and proper in her uniform and black stockings and sturdy shoes with the shoelaces. Most girls pushed the regulation black shoe requirement to the brink of acceptability with buckles and heels, but hers looked robust enough to wear on a ten mile march. But remembering her black, lace up boots, I surged forward, sore knee and all.

“Hey.”

She turned around and her face fell. I’d been battered out on the field but I hadn’t seen my reflection, and from her reaction, it can’t have been good.

“Hey. Are you okay?” Her eyes drooped in compassion and she reached up toward me.

The air in my lungs rushed as I anticipated the touch of her fingers on my wound, but just as quickly she withdrew, biting down on her lower lip. I was in fear of hyperventilating, or passing out, Millie Conway making me wonder if I’d suffered a concussion.

I remember her saying that my catch was amazing, but other than that it was all a blur, and as I limped off, every ache and pain returned.

Our ice bath tubs were a new innovation this season, and as much as I detested them, I knew it would do me good. Jumping into a freezing cold giant trash can was madness, but we were sold on the increase in blood flow to optimize and speed recovery. Any advantage to help reduce muscle fatigue and whatever was wrong with my stupid knee.

After showering, I swallowed a bunch of pain meds and massaged some muscle rub onto my legs and shoulders before dressing back into our formal uniform, which was customary.
